Sex Week, the brooklyn-based duo, have only been making indie/alternative rock music together since February 2023. With only 90k monthly listeners on Spotify the group is relatively new.
The album Sex Week was released on August 30th 2024. They create such unique textures whether it’s from the background instrumentals or the delivery in the vocals. The lyrics are blunt and uniquely worded in each song. The album only contains 7 songs but there’s such contrast within it from “Angel Blessings” with its captivating distortion and whispering screaming vocals; to “Toad Mode” where the song was created based on their mutual friend, Allison’s cat. The silliness is what makes this enjoyable. The cat also makes appearances within both the music and the music video as well.
A notable song on this album has to be “Naked.” The song is sung almost more nasally; with a memorable lyric of “Don’t know what that’s about gotta figure that out” chanted throughout the song. It felt relatable, this idea of being scared of intimacy and first time experiences. But with the music video, they add a sense of humor to it, making it silly. It’s made to look like a reality TV dating show. The awkwardness but also innocence between the two contestants going on a date tied it all together.
Overall this duo are having fun and creating whatever they want, with not only creating unique and unconventional songs, but also unconventional music videos to go along with it.
